Happy to hear your good news in using Letterland, my daughter Phoebe have great improvement too!
The teachers in the kindergarten tell me they don't know Phoebe knows how to read-aloud (she can read out words but most of the time she don't know the meaning).
But one day they saw her holding a card and whispering, then one of the teacher walk near her and listen what her's whispering about. They surprise to find that she is holding a card( i don't know what's it) to read.
I think she feels happy that she can read-aloud english that make her with a kind of confidence in learning english and reading english story books too.

Share with you later!

Perth:

In my opinion, those phonically difficult words are explained in Programme 2 "oo" sound and "ea" sound "e" short sound and "e" long sound, I would have a jump to tell the story about these word in order to explain these words.
In the view of children they won't know which part should be learn first and which parts are in Programme 2, so they are just some funny stories, it won't make any different to them.
BTW, when I taught about "when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking" to my daughter, I use the Between the Lions songs to explain it, and it wonderful, please note the following link:

http://pbskids.org/lions/songs/two_vowels_rp.html

When Two Vowels Go Walking

When two vowels go walking
The first one does the talking
In "boat" you hear the "o" and not the "a"

In "meat" you hear the "e"
The "a" sits quietly
The second vowel you see but you don't say

But...
Shh!

Just the two of us together
In "train" and "pail" and "rain"
The "a" speaks up; the "i" does not
But...
Shh! Let me explain

When two vowels go walking
The first one does the talking
In "brain" you hear the "a" but not the "i"

In "soap" the "o" is clear
The "a" you never hear
In "say" you say the "a" and not the "y"

But...
Shh! Isn't it neat?
But...
Shh! It can't be beat!
But...
Shh! It's such a dream!

Don't mean to boast
But here's a toast
We're quite a team!

When two vowels go walking
The first one does the talking
I'm sorry, number two, it's such a shame

Although it gives you pain
The rule is very plain
When two vowels walk
The first one says its name!

But...
Shh!

Yes, when two vowels walk
The first one says its name!

Dear Maria,
Nice to see you again. I have printed out your picture code cards you posted here for use. thanks.

I have one question. if our kids is in traditional school their dictation does not follow the level of phonic they have taught. They would have to dictate phonically difficult words like 'foot', 'teach'.

What you suggest if he come across phonically difficult word that he has to dictate? How i can taught him to dictate such words?

You're right, for the word "orange" it shouldn't be Golden Girl with Eddy Elephant.
But Golden Girl's friend Gentle Ginger
Gentle Ginger is just as athletic as Jumping Jim, whose sound is identical to hers. But she is far less shy. She loves people watching her as she practises her gymnastic tricks in words which is why she truns up in more words than Jumping Jim. (Programme 2 Teacher's Guide P.204)

Golden Girl thinks everyone should notice Gentle Ginger's gymnastic tricks in words, so she asks Mr E if he could use some of his new Blue Magic e's to light her up with sparking blue light as she does her somersaults. "Eeeasily!" cries Mr E. Gentle Ginger is so pleased to be in the limelight that she does her best somersaults every time she is next to a Blue Magic e. She also starts to say her name like this, 'ge...' for 'Gentle Ginger'.(Programme 2 Teacher's Guide P.204)

Fireman Frank.....

Hairy Hat Man!?
screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" onmouseover="if(this.width>screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" onclick="if(!this.resized) {return true;} else {window.open(this.src);}" onmousewheel="return imgzoom(this);" alt="" border="0">
Golden Girl knows that Hairy Hat Man hates noise, so whenever he stands next to her in a word she keeps completely quiet. So does he. They just enjoy being silent together
而Programme2 picture code card公仔背面的灰色hints就係o甘寫: .Golden Girl and the Hairy Hat Man are almost alwys silent when they are together
例如:cough, laugh, rough, enough, laughter, tough......
In one word laugh, it seems that both Golden Girl and the Hat Man cannot resist laughing softly like this, 'fff, fff, fff'. Then gh sounds just like f or ph. This also happens in the words cough, rough, tough and enough.
就係因為Golden Girl o甘乖,Hairy Hat Man好錫佢o架,佢成日會叫Ice Cream Man 企在Golden Girl的 right hand side來請Ice Cream佢食o忝!所以在gh前的i是Ice Cream 來架,"igh"於是讀"i"o刺!
screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" onmouseover="if(this.width>screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" onclick="if(!this.resized) {return true;} else {window.open(this.src);}" onmousewheel="return imgzoom(this);" alt="" border="0">
例如:bright, fight, high, righ, night, might......

Action songs
screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" onmouseover="if(this.width>screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" onclick="if(!this.resized) {return true;} else {window.open(this.src);}" onmousewheel="return imgzoom(this);" alt="" border="0">

Kammy:

不過Picture Code Card是沒有Captial Letters的,只是在 First Reading Flash Cards先有,但old edition就印得好差,new edition又人物唔同,所以我都無o羊點用到,其實只要拿ABC Book來講已經可以的了。

Clever Cat, Clever Cat, How do you do? What can you see in the Letterland Zoo?

"Come out, Bouncy Ben," says Clever Cat. "I can see you under the bush."
"I can see you Golden Girl," says Clever Cat. "You re behind the gate"
"Come down, Annie Apple," says Clever Cat. "I can see you up in the apple tree."
"Out you come, Hairy Hat Man," says Clever Cat. "I can see you in the hut".......

Becky:
ETC Educational Technology Connection (HK) Ltd 26532789

kctammy:
Who's That?
screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" onmouseover="if(this.width>screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" onclick="if(!this.resized) {return true;} else {window.open(this.src);}" onmousewheel="return imgzoom(this);" alt="" border="0">screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" onmouseover="if(this.width>screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" onclick="if(!this.resized) {return true;} else {window.open(this.src);}" onmousewheel="return imgzoom(this);" alt="" border="0">

Dear All,

Charis:

你可以選擇在bid前問問seller肯唔肯post來HK,順便問埋surface mail的郵費(其實大概同surface mail to US一樣),又或者個seller係有寫post to worldwild的,你就可以bid完先問佢要加幾多錢郵費。

Dear marieyuen,

I think it is very important to have the flash cards for some of the above phonics pattern, e.g. ch, sh, th...etc as the kid can associate the stories easily from the graphics on the flash cards. Do you have those flash cards? I check the price from ETC - $3xx for Programme 1 and another $3xx for Programme 2 flash cards, which I think too expensive. Any comment about where I can scan those graphics?

1. Letterland ABC Book (太古$90)
3. Programme 1 Teacher's Guide (太古$390)
4. Programme 1 Picture Code Cards (太古$330)
5. BBC - Words and Pictures Software 【.Phonic Clip Art】CD-Rom (太古$280)

Hi, Marie,

You are really an expert in "Letterland". I'm also very interested to buy the books for my kid. But she is quite "old" already and know all A-Z. I teach her phonics myself in the past (of course, not so structure!) Can I skip the early year stage and start from programme 1 directly? Or is there any "minimum requirement", books that we should read so that the kids can catch up with the stories, characters etc. Pls advise. Many thanks in advance.

記得看看賣家肯不肯post to worldwild,如果只係寫UK Only你可以bid之前先按ask seller a question問佢可不可以寄來香港,好多都肯的。

另外,我今日又去了一次太古 showroom,我問Connie有關New Edition的問題,佢話New Edition是不會cover所有blends的,只會cover到英國教育部要求cover的內容,所以她說,覺得Old Edition是比較適合香港多一些。

Dear Marie

Thank you for your email regarding the new Letterlanders. Many considerations were taken into account in making changes to some of our characters. They include some political correctness points. Our concern to be as supportive as possible to teachers in all parts of the world was highest on our list. We also saw a need to move with the times. For example, since the advent of digital clocks and watches that don’t ‘tick’ some children no longer have the word ‘ticking’ in their vocabulary. Hence the shift to Talking Tess.

The attached transition stories for character changes may be useful. These will be added to our website, www.letterland.com shortly. Meanwhile Lyn Wendon, the originator of Letterland, would be glad to hear from you further, given your daughter's strong familiarity with the original characters. What are her reactions to the changes? Her opinion counts! She may even have some better ideas for some of the changes. Children are often leaders in the realm of imagination! Also how much do you feel she has benefited from Letterland?

If you would like, too, to give us your postal address, we can keep you up to date as more new publications become available based on the new art style.

Best wishes

Jokey2828:

Letterland
Where is Letterland?
Letterland is everywhere where there are letters and words. Leterland can be in the supermarket, on the bus, at the zoo, in a classroom and of course.... in books! Children are not confused by the logic, as the idea of Letteralnd sprung out of children's imaginations. Instead the concept that the LEtterlanders are present in all wrods is some how reassuring to children as the characters provide the tools they need to help them spell words.
Her girlfriend makes another sound, another sound....o甘小朋友問,o羊another sound呀? 好似c的soft sound 的,當g見到e,i,y就會出現.....
E - Easy Magic Man帶住佢一齊,成日有魔術睇,佢遲o的重會變好多魔術,好得意o架!(因為我知道programme1 會學到magic e會變slient magic e或將short vowel變long vowel,會幾多變化,所以想佢早o的有心理準備,到學的時後唔會覺得辛苦,而係覺得變魔術)於是佢聽到我鍾意有long vowel man的人物之後,就話自己鍾意Annie Apple,叫我叫佢個名做Annie Apple,爸爸就係take care佢的Apron Man。

Don't forget that Letterland is a secret place. That means all the people and animals are usually invisible. So when they are in words, you will only see their letter shapes. But you'll know who they really are, won't you!

kctammy:

1. Firemand Fred ->變左 Firefighter Fred
3. Hairy Hat Man ->變左HarryHat Man無左鬚又無毛
5. Naughty Nick ->變左Noisy Nick
9. Vase of Violets ->變左Vicky Violet多左個女仔
11. Max and Maxine ->變左Fix-it Max,Maxine都唔見左

Alphabet Rhymes
Activity Book and Flashcards
ABC Book and Cassettle

Early Years Casette, Alphabet Songs CD and Once Upon a Time in Letterland DVD.

DIY Letterland Magnetic files:

Crabma:
1. ABC book[
2. Early Years Handbook cassette[
3. Alphabet songs [太古CD$120]
4. Once upon a time [太古DVD$180]〕
screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" onmouseover="if(this.width>screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" onclick="if(!this.resized) {return true;} else {window.open(this.src);}" onmousewheel="return imgzoom(this);" alt="" border="0">
Session 1 : Introducing Bouncy Ben
I can see a blue letter on this page. And I can seesomebody looking out of the letter. Can you see two blue eyes looking out of the letter? Yes, those blue eyes belong to a letterland rabbit called Bouncy Ben.
Can you see his blue ball at the bottom of the page? He bounced that ball into to bushes. Shall we put our hand out and pretend we've got a ball and bounce it?
Bounce, bounce, bounce goes the ball. That's right. Put your ball away now, and give your havd a rest.
Bouncy Ben loves playing with a ball. He dose something special with his big blue ball as well. Sometimes he balances his blue ball on top of his head. (That when he change to capital letter B sharp)

Session 2 : Bouncy Ben's shape and sound
let's have a look at Bouncy Ben's blue letter on his page again. Shall we draw it?
I'm going to strt at the top of Bouncy Ben's big brown ear, go down his ear, and then I'm going to go back up over has face... and I stop just under his chin.
And while I do it this time, I'm going to say Bouncy Ben's special sound. You listen. Bouncy Ben says' b..., b..., bl...'. It's a very short little sound.
Can you say his short little sound with me? 'B..., b..., b...'. Yes, Bouncy Ben says, 'b....'.
I can see something yellow right at the top of the page. It uses its yellow wings to fly. Do you know what it's called? That's right. It's a butterfly. a beautiful butterfly.
Wait a minute. That word butterfly starts with Bouncy Ben's sound, doesn't it? "B..., b...' butterfly. That's the sound Ben always makes in words!
And can you see something else that flies in the sky? It has a sting. What's it called? A bee! That's right. It's a buzzy bee.
Who can remember how we draw Bouncy Ben again? Where do we start? Right at the tip of his big long ears. We go right down his ear, then up around his face so he is ready to say 'b..., b..., b...' for Bouncy Ben.

Objective, What you need, Teaching suggestions [ included: Intrucing Bouncy Bouncy Ben, Bouncy Ben's letter shape, Bouncy Ben's sound], Bouncy Ben's words list, Things to do, Things to talk about and Explaining the capital B shape.如果係vowel,重會講埋long vowel man

ABC book就一定唔少得,但係可以考慮在yesasia買,因為$64.x平過太古成廿幾元呀!screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" onmouseover="if(this.width>screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" onclick="if(!this.resized) {return true;} else {window.open(this.src);}" onmousewheel="return imgzoom(this);" alt="" border="0">Once Upon a time DVD就optional啦,screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" onmouseover="if(this.width>screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" onclick="if(!this.resized) {return true;} else {window.open(this.src);}" onmousewheel="return imgzoom(this);" alt="" border="0">因為佢係分好多個section(a-e)一個故事、(f-j)一個故事...

另外,我覺得Magnetic Letters(太古$60)最底買
screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" onmouseover="if(this.width>screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" onclick="if(!this.resized) {return true;} else {window.open(this.src);}" onmousewheel="return imgzoom(this);" alt="" border="0">, 因為有成62個letters用來玩認letters同building words,佢後面重有教你,有o的plain letter點用,因為有時有些字的letter係不發聲或同其他letter拼在一起時有第二種聲,所以要用plain letter,但係就唔講點解住,遲o的一路個故事講落去就會明白架啦。
但係佢唯一美中不足就係無Captial letters,又無一些「特別的組合」,所以我已經scan了Captial letter來自己做磁貼. screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" onmouseover="if(this.width>screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" onclick="if(!this.resized) {return true;} else {window.open(this.src);}" onmousewheel="return imgzoom(this);" alt="" border="0">如 果想要這兩個file自己做磁貼的話可以比個email address我,但個file都好大,small letterso個個有2MB幾,如果想做磁貼不如買重底,不過可以自己做貼紙,成本大約$5好抵玩;Captial letters差不多1mb 可以印點紙或做磁貼都得。
Onsets & Rimes Bookscreen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" onmouseover="if(this.width>screen.width*0.7) {this.resized=true; this.width=screen.width*0.7; this.style.cursor='hand'; this.alt='Click here to open new window\nCTRL+Mouse wheel to zoom in/out';}" onclick="if(!this.resized) {return true;} else {window.open(this.src);}" onmousewheel="return imgzoom(this);" alt="" border="0"> ]

Meggi:

My first reading flash card內找番剛學的letter出來,當係revision,又或者在一些很多letterland character的圖內叫佢找番剛學的那個,問多次佢記唔記得個sound。That's all!

Phonics for kids....
例 如Phonics for kids,"A"是Annie Ant,Annie Ant has an axe,於是有首歌唱Annie Ant has an axe, "a" "a" "a"。
但 係letterland的approach是不同的,雖然佢都係有一個人物代表"A","Annie Apple"但係佢係一個有性格,背後有故事的人物,當然佢都有首歌(Alphabet Songs)比小朋友唱出佢的sound,平時佢個樣係small letter "a",因為佢係apple會碌來碌去,所以寫letter a時:(writing song)

At the leaf begin.
Go round the apple this way.
Then add a line down,
so Annie won't rool away.

每個letter平時都係small letter因為其實我們成日見到的字都係用small letter組成的,我唔明點解好多學英文的教材都係學Captial letter先?o甘令小朋友好難catch up with using small letters!
但係每當佢o地start a sentence or a name時,佢o地就會好開心,所以會變樣(變成captial letter)!
Captial Letter A in shapes! 原來有個人take care of Annie Apple and all of her apple friends,佢就係Mr A (long vowel sound of "A") - The Apron Man.......

2. It's wonderful when she gets into PROGRAMME ONE and PROGRAMME TWO. She easily understands "q" must go with "u", quarrelsome queen always bring along with an umbrella, e.g. 'queen', 'quiet', 'quick', 'quack'.....see! 'U' must follow 'Q'.

3. e.g."H" is called 'Hairy Hat Man'. He hates noises so he doesn't put on shoes. He always speak in soft sound 'ha'. When he meets the 'S' (Sammy Snake--------always sound ssssssssss; it's so noisy, right!), he will turn his head to say 'SHhhhh'. It's a good way to let the child understand the structure of the sound through such interesting story.

;-)
